"There is no doubt that having these kinds of unique tools available and having the strong multidisciplinary environment that allows for interaction gives us a lot of advantage to better understand science," says Jeff Blackmon, physics division, ORNL.

Though it is often--and justifiably--maligned, it is ignorance--and recognizing where it exists--that drives scientists to do groundbreaking science.

The majority of those working in academic tech transfer have come from a background in scientific research, so there is a need for professional training in technology transfer.

Although "the researcher is free to do whatever he wants," says Marché, "I will be working in a team, so I will necessarily get interested in their field of research."

"Be aware of where your day goes, implement whatever strategies you can think of to save time, and do not get so caught up in the day-to-day that you lose site of your objectives."

In Spain, "Most people integrate into an existing and functioning lab," which gives them less freedom," says de Nalda Minguez.

The interview process, she points out, goes both ways: They are interviewing you and you are interviewing them.
