I’ve stopped wallowing in the “I feel so alone!” pity party I subjected myself to for the first month or two.

You don't know what you're getting into until you're in it; even now, I'm not so sure what I'm in.

It's scary and exciting for exactly the same reason: The possibilities are endless.

Some things must be worked through, and that takes time.

Diggs was a 2004 Black Engineer of the Year Award winner in the "Promising Scientist in Government" category. He was also named one of the 50 Most Important Blacks in Research Science in 2004 by
Science Spectrum magazine.

This is a high-stakes game with no place for amateurs.

Assamagan has dedicated his career to developing detectors and software to explore still-uncharted areas of particle physics.

"I am always looking for that sense of discovery, that constant feeling of exploration and the opportunity to be outside in environments that are new and challenging," says Darlene Lim, a biogeologist postdoc at NASA's Ames Research Center.

"Even if you are not doing science when you are an advisor, you definitely bring your training as a scientist to the table – and this can be of great benefit," says Nancy Kingsbury, Science Advisor at Natural Resources Canada.

"These are pipeline programs; these are the programs that produce both human capital and technologies, and NASA basically disrupted the pipeline," says Lennard Fisk, a space science professor at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor,and co-author of a National Research Council Report.

"You can't turn the money on and just watch it regenerate itself," says Michael Pivovaroff.

“Our colliders are like time machines for physicists,” says Young-Kee Kim, the deputy director of Fermilab. “In a sense, we are creating early universes in our accelerators.”

If successful, Jackson’s current mission of developing a more secure method of transferring information using a single photon would revolutionize information technology.

"We can basically go into a terrorist's apartment and confirm that he had in his possession nuclear material."
