Scientists who are considering a pronounced change of career should try to understand their reasons as much as they can.

"Runaway success, riches, or magical solutions to my personal shortcomings are not in sight. I just have the quiet feeling that I am moving my career in a direction that suits me best."

What industry needs is researchers who understand the whole system.

The big difference with university students is that their selection doesn't take place at the gate like for the
Grandes Ecoles, so there is less recognition of their merit to pursue academic studies.

When I came to look for employment, all the advertised jobs required a number of years of formal experience, and I began to despair of finding a job that I actually wanted to do!
