Autoimmune Diseases –Elan is focused on helping patients suffering from autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Tysabri –an alpha 4 integren antagonist –is the first of a new class of adhesion molecule inhibitors for MS. It has been approved in both the United States and Europe for MS. Filings have also been made in Europe to approve Tysabri for the treatment of Crohn’s disease.
Neurodegenerative Diseases –Elan is focused on discovering therapies for the millions of patients with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. Elan’s pioneering research and development in Alzheimer’s focuses on blocking the generation or enhancing the clearance of beta amyloid in the brain. Progress has also been made in early Parkinson’s disease research.
