"I missed working in a university; I missed being in the intellectually challenging environment and applying the skills and knowledge I had gained from doing a PhD."
The most rewarding part of my day is working with faculty members to identify research-funding strategies and hearing about the diversity and richness of York University's research faculty.
"Apart from me--a former physicist and, at the time, an aspiring writer--our ranks included a Ph.D.-level zoologist who spent her summers growing organic cilantro for market."
The postdocs take particular pride that dire predictions of spoiled relationships with mentors have not come true. The negotiations, in Wallace's words, "were very harmonious and productive."
I still do not miss doing research. Instead of focussing on a highly specific project in a research group, I now have a far broader overview on the entire spectrum of research at the faculty.
"There is a steady demand for scientific editing services, and although it doesn't pay that well, it is an excellent way to hone your editing skills and a great way to make contacts."
I no longer define myself as a "failing scientist", but as someone who does science as well as a myriad of other things--including a vicious rugby tackle!
"No matter where you begin this trek, you can be sure that you will end at your appropriate destination, despite the roadblocks, detours, sidetracks, and the alternative routes you take."
