Event Summary
Lori Conlan, Ph.D. from the National Institutes of Health offered practical and informative advice on attending career fairs and ways to use networking to advance your career as a scientist.
After a short break, participants chose one of two breakout sessions: one on resumes and one on immigration issues for postdocs. The session on resume issues, led by Mark Presnell and Derek Haseltine from Johns Hopkins University, compared and contrasted CVs and resumes and provided resume advice tailored to postdocs in the sciences. Lawyers Adam Frank and Edward Leavy from Leavy & Frank, LLC, meanwhile, ran a great session on immigration issues that postdocs face, providing clear and concise information on the various avenues available to foreign scientists for building their future in the US.
Following the breakout sessions, many participants stayed to have individual consultations with the immigration lawyers or with resume experts. Participants commented that this individual attention was extremely useful. Overall, the program was well-received and a great event for the Outreach Program. Read the AAAS news article on the event.
