STEM Talent 2008: A Symposium and Career Fair for Postdocs in the Capital Region was held October 16, 2008 on the campus of the National Institutes of Health.
Science Careers was one of the co-sponsors of this symposium and career fair. Among the topics covered in the symposium were:
- Entrepreneurship
- Careers away from the bench
- Working in established companies
- Interviewing Skills
- Opportunities for Career Training
- Making the Transition
Event Summary
Science Careers moderated two sessions during the event: Careers Beyond the Bench: Journalism, Law, Government, & Non-Profits and Interviewing Skills. In the Careers Beyond the Bench session, our panel consisted of Kimberly Benton of the FDA, Laura Bonetta, a freelance science writer, Betsy Haanes of Sterne, Kessler, Goldstein, & Fox, P.L.L.C., and Chuck Schultz of HHMI. The panelists shared information about their careers and their experiences along the way. Participants asked lots of questions, leading to an interesting discussion.
For the Interviewing Skills presentation, we partnered with the staffing company Kelly Services. Meredith Leader, Jennifer Wind, and Damien Terry from Kelly Services presented tricks and tips to help postdocs be successful in their interviews. They talked about the best way to prepare for an interview, responding to questions and asking your own during an interview, and ways to effectively follow up afterwards.
