On June 17, 2010 Science Careers Contributing Editor for South and West Europe Babette Pain took part in a panel discussion on Alternative Career Paths at the first Symposium on Career Development (Careers in Science: Life After a PhD Degree) organized by the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology Graduate Student Group in Porto, Portugal.

Event Summary
Dubbed "all the things that you never thought of doing after getting a Ph.D. degree in basic science," the panel discussion explored careers in science journalism, science communication and outreach, and management consulting. Speakers spoke about their own career paths and gave insight into what critical skills they acquired during graduate school that made them good candidates for these "alternative" careers, what additional training they needed, and how they found their jobs.
